Riverfront Development In Franklin Seeks Public Input

Officials with the City of Franklin have been looking for public input in a study that would create development along the Harpeth River.

The Riverfront Planning Study was planned to help understand the challenges and opportunities such a project would bring to Downtown Franklin.

The project has been set to include 1.4 miles of land along both sides of the river from Pinkerton Park to Bicentennial Park.

The idea to explore creating a river walk will require public thoughts and identifying areas within the floodplain that may be appropriate for development.

"The property adjacent to the Harpeth River is in the floodplain, and that creates a number of challenges," Assistant City Administrator Vernon Gerth told NewsChannel 5. "The key is getting a lot of our residents to provide input on what they've seen in other places and how that may look in Franklin."

City officials said they have been increasingly interested in creating a more walkable community and saw the Harpeth River as an opportunity.

"This is a natural resource, and if we do it correctly, it'll build upon what we already have in Downtown Franklin," Gerth added.

The city has asked residents to fill out a survey online on what their vision is on the Riverfront.

Two open house meetings have been scheduled on Monday, February 27 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at City Hall.
