The Hendersonville man accused of murdering and decapitating his father-in-law in 2014 has been deemed competent to stand trial.

A Sumner County judge said on Friday he has "no doubt" that Sandie Calvert is competent for a jury trial in March.

Calvert has been charged with first degree murder and abuse of a corpse in the shooting death of 68-year-old James Hudgins in February 2014.

Calvert was originally declared incompetent to stand trial in November 2015 and was sent to the Middle Tennessee Mental Health Institute for further evaluations, but doctors have now said that Calvert is competent to stand trial.

Dr. David Crawford testified Friday that he's noticed a difference in Calvert's competency since late 2015 when he first began treating him. He attributed that success to more medication and being kept in a hospital as opposed to jail.

Calvert's trial date has been set for March 20. Until then, he'll remain in custody at the Middle Tennessee Mental Health Institute.
