A South Carolina man who helped sell fraudulent health insurance policies to over 17,000 victims nationwide has been sentenced to 82 months in prison.
According to the U.S. attorney's office in Nashville, the fraudulent plans were marketed by a Springfield company called Smart Data Solutions.
That company and related entities were liquidated by the state in 2010 after a Davidson County court found they were acting as an unlicensed insurance company and posed a significant hazard to the public.
William Worthy II of Isle of Palms, South Carolina, admitted to participating in the scheme with co-conspirators. Together they embezzled more than $5.4 million for their personal use.
Worthy accepted responsibility for more than $7.3 million of losses from the fraud.
He was sentenced Friday. A restitution hearing has been scheduled for June 1.
