Driver Charged After TDOT Employee Hit On I-40

An employee with the Tennessee Department of Transportation was injured after being struck by a vehicle on Interstate 40 in the Hermitage area. 

The crash happened just after 7 p.m. Saturday in the westbound lanes of the interstate near the Old Hickory Boulevard exit.

Officials said the worker was helping a family change their flat tire when the wreck took place.

According to the police affidavit, Dennis Castellanos Moreno failed see other vehicles slowing down. When he tried to stop he lost control and struck the TDOT worker. 

The worker sustained "serious bodily injury." 

The conditions at the time were wet with light rain falling in the area. It was not known if the weather contributed to the crash or not. 

The employee was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and was listed in serious condition. The extent of the injuries was not known. 

The identities of the employee was not available.

According to the myTDOT Facebook page, the worker suffered several broken bones.

Moreno was charged with operating a vehicle without a license and driving without insurance. He was released on bond.
