A body recovered from the Cumberland River has been identified.

On Thursday, authorities said the victim was 38-year-old Eric Stepp. Officials confirmed he was homeless.

Stepp's body was recovered from the river downtown nearly two days after he went underwater and never resurfaced.

Officials with the Nashville Fire Department said in a Tweet Tuesday morning his body had been spotted near Nissan Stadium.

Crews with the Office of Emergency Management were called to the scene. The body was recovered a short time later and taken to Riverfront Park.

Stepp went missing around 3 p.m. Sunday on the river near the 100 block of 1st Avenue South.

According to witnesses, he had asked for a suit to swim across. He then allegedly began swimming without one, went out a couple dozen feet, and went under.

No further details were available.
