A candlelight vigil was held in Nashville to honor the life of a popular local music DJ who died in an accidental shooting.

Hundreds gathered Saturday night at the McFerrin Community Center to remember 19-year-old Malik Khayyam.

They remembered the man who they said dedicated his life to music and hosting parties. He also made sure those around him always had a smile on their face.

People said they lost a brother, a friend, and a popular DJ, who was goofy at times. Music was his biggest passion.

Malik's mother spoke to the crowd during the vigil. Her message to teens was simple: put the guns down and pick up a hobby.

The shooting happened Friday morning inside a home in the 100 block of Donald Street.

Witnesses told police the single gunshot was not intentional.

An investigation indicated a pistol, which was in Malik’s hand, discharged when someone else tried to take it.

Three people who were with Malik at the time of the shooting have been cooperating with police.

No charges have been sought.
