Officials with the Metro Nashville Police Department said a driver has been arrested after allegedly going the wrong way on the interstate and killing a man in a crash.

The wreck happened on the Interstate 65 South ramp near Interstate 440 just before 2 a.m. Sunday.

Authorities said a truck was driving east in the westbound lanes of I-440 before it hit an SUV head-on. The 25-year-old driver of the SUV from Ohio, identified as John Lattimer, was killed.

Officials said the wrong-way driver, now identified as 19-year-old Guillermo Vera, then got out of his truck and ran toward condos on Franklin Road.

K-9 officers were brought in to try and track him down, but police weren't initially able to find him.

Vera later turned himself in. He told authorities he drank at least four beers at a party just before the crash. He also admitted to smoking marijuana the night before.

According to Vera, he was talking on his cell phone when he made an improper turn onto the interstate.

Reports stated Vera had bloodshot and watery eyes. He also had an odor of alcohol coming from him.

He admitted to feeling tipsy before driving. Officials said he agreed to a blood test, but he then refused after he got to the hospital. His blood was obtained through a search warrant.

Vera has been charged with vehicular homicide. The investigation remained ongoing.
