A man has been charged with attempted murder after police say he stabbed his own girlfriend with a butcher knife.

According to an affidavit from Metro Nashville Police, the incident happened back in September.

Police said it took the victim a month to come forward to talk about what happened.

As of Thursday morning, her boyfriend – identified as Jesus Valenzuela – has been charged with attempted murder.

His girlfriend told police she was asleep in their apartment on September 23 when Valenzuela woke her up, saying he was going to kill her.

She said he began to stab her with a butcher knife and she covered herself with her right arm. She provided pictures of her injuries to detectives.

The affidavit said she received cuts to the right side of her face, a cut to the top of her forehead and cuts to her right arm.

Valenzuela was jailed on a $100,000 bond.
