Man arrested after jumping into the Cumberland River while trying to evade police

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Clarksville Police have taken a man into custody after he fled a vehicle he was a passenger in and jumped into the Cumberland River to evade arrest.

Officers received a call in the area of Providence Blvd. in Clarksville around 1:10 a.m. on Friday. They stopped a vehicle on Riverside Drive which had been seen leaving the area where the shooting had occurred.

Police recognized the passenger in the vehicle to be Damien Gray, who currently had several active felony warrants.

As officers approached, Gray got out of the vehicle, ran behind the nearby Waffle House and jumped into the river.

Eventually police were able to convince Gray to get out of the water and he was taken into custody.

Grey has been booked into the Montgomery Jail and charged with Burglary x 7, Theft of property x 6, Theft of a Motor Vehicle x 2, and Vandalism. His bond has been set at $140,000.
