A driver was able to escape custody after police say he tried to strike an officer during a traffic stop in Nashville. A chase ensued after officers later spotted the suspect's vehicle.

The incident came to an end around 1 a.m. Thursday near Charlotte Pike and Old Hickory Boulevard.

Earlier in the night, Metro Nashville Police officials said a driver tried to hit an officer during a traffic stop on Charlotte near 33rd Avenue.

The officer was apparently outside his vehicle when the driver swerved "in a perceived attempt to strike him."

Police said an officer later spotted the suspect's car and tried to pull the man over but he allegedly drove away in an erratic manner.

A spike strip was set up at the corner of Old Hickory Boulevard and Charlotte Pike, where his tires were deflated.

He made it another mile and a half down the road where he got out of the car and ran into the woods behind a home.

Officers used K9s to search the area for almost two hours but didn’t find him. His car has since been towed away.

Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers at 615-74-CRIME.
