NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — A convicted felon, who had been serving a federal sentence for drug charges, has returned to Nashville after he was indicted in connection with a 1994 murder.

Metro Nashville police said 47-year-old John Derrick Martin is accused of killing 27-year-old Julian R. Clark on March 21, 1994 -- the same day Martin's criminal trial was set to begin.

Clark was set to testify against Martin when police say someone kicked in the door to his Brentridge Circle apartment and shot him multiple times while he slept.

Martin was convicted in a cocaine case later in 1994. Police said he was subsequently convicted in a federal drug case in Arizona.

In 2002, he was indicted for first-degree murder in connection with Clark's killing.

Martin was being held in the Metro Jail without bond.
