Man charged with shooting, killing 18-year-old after drug deal goes wrong

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — A Nashville man was indicted in connection to a deadly shooting that killed an 18-year-old in December 2018.

Police believe Demontez Johnson shot and killed Dontae Drew on Dickerson Pike near Briley Parkway after a group of men used fake money to buy marijuana.

Drew was driving the group away from the scene when the sellers caught up to the vehicle and fired shots.

Metro police identified Johnson as the suspect in the shooting, but he alluded police until April 15, 2019 when he was arrested in Fayetteville.

On September 27, Johnson was indicted by a grand jury on seven counts:

  • First-degree murder - premeditated / intentional
  • Attempted first-degree murder
  • Weapon - dangerous felony - employ firearm with intent
  • Attempted first degree murder - premeditated / intentional
  • Weapon - dangerous felony - employ firearm with intent
  • Aggravated assault with a deadly weapon
  • Aggravated assault with a deadly weapon

Johnson is scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday.
