NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — A 19-year-old was indicted on a murder charge in the deadly shooting of 22-year-old D'andre Whitley on October 5.
On Thursday, a Davidson County Grand Jury indicted Kevon Mayberry on a charge of first-degree murder.
Police say Whitley was a passenger in a vehicle traveling on the interstate near the I-24/I-65 junction when he was shot. The driver exited the interstate at Rosa L. Parks Boulevard but lost control and crashed in the 1600 block.
The shooting was retaliation for a prior fight that didn’t involve Whitley, but one of his friends, according to investigators.
At the time of the shooting, Mayberry was serving a 10-year probated sentence in regard to the 2018 fatal shooting of a 15-year-old outside a home on Brookway Drive. Mayberry was age 16 at the time. The case was transferred to adult court, where he pleaded guilty to aggravated assault resulting in death, a second count of aggravated assault, and two counts of felony reckless endangerment.
Mayberry was arrested for violation of probation on October 28 and was still in jail when he was served with the first-degree murder indictment today.
