Man Killed In Officer-Involved Shooting In Carthage

Officials with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation have been looking into the circumstances surrounding a fatal officer-involved shooting in Carthage.

The shooting happened around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday. According to reports, a security guard at Smith County Hospital called the Carthage Police Department about a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot.

Not long after that call, the shooting reportedly took place. TBI officials said two officers went to investigate and approached the vehicle on foot.

That’s when the driver, later identified as 25-year-old Joseph Robbins, tried to hit one of the officers with his vehicle.

An officer then fired multiple shots. Robbins was hit and later died.

The officers were not injured in the incident.

Agents with the TBI said they're gathering evidence. The officer’s identity was not released.
