NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — The holidays are just around the corner, which means it's vacation time for many Americans. But this year, surveys show a lot of people aren't planning to spend that time off with loved ones.

According to Travelocity, 80% of Americans plan to hit the road as opposed to fly to see family this holiday season.

The travel company's annual Holiday Outlook survey says a quarter of Americans plan to take a personal vacation this year instead. It also says that number jumps up to 45% for families with children under 18 years old.

Instead of staying with family, most travelers plan to stay at a hotel or a vacation rental over the holidays. Two-thirds of Americans also plan on traveling 250 miles or less from home.

Not everyone wants to drive though. Travelocity said 20% of Americans still plan to fly for the holidays.

Something travelers will notice when planning trips - most travel search engines have a filter where you can check out all the safety precautions that hotels and airlines are taking, something now part of the norm in 2020.
