NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Parking illegally in Nashville could get more expensive.

A plan to double parking fines passed a second reading at Tuesday night's Metro Council meeting.

Right now, it's not very expensive to pay off a parking ticket. The $11 fine could be boosted to $25 if a bill is approved by Metro City Council.

Councilman Colby Sledge said drivers are taking advantage of keeping their vehicles parked at meters or on the streets. He feels if the fine is more than doubled, this will be less of a problem in the city. Sledge said even with that bump in fine, there will be some people who will park for however long they want to.

The councilman said the fee increase isn't about making money, it's more about freeing up parking space for people to use.

The bill still needs to pass a third reading in Metro Council before it becomes official.
