NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — A group dedicated to investigating alleged police misconduct in Nashville is one step closer to being formed.

Metro council members voted on the first two nominees of the Community Oversight Board.

Both Phyllis Hildreth and Robert Cooper were nominated by Mayor David Briley. They were expected to go through the election and confirmation process and that's exactly what happened during Tuesday night's council meeting.

Cooper, Jr. and Hildreth were both appointed for a term expiring on January 31, 2020.

The remaining nine nominees will be interviewed by several committees over the course of this week and are expected to be confirmed on January 22.

Several community activists felt an oversight board was necessary after two officer-involved shootings in Nashville – most recently, the death of Daniel Hambrick, a black man who was shot by a white police officer.

The majority of voters, almost 60 percent, passed an amendment to form the oversight board during the midterm elections.

To meet the deadline of the charter amendment, members of the COB must be selected by the end of this month.
