In order to better serve Nashville's homeless and focus their efforts, two homelessness organizations could merge to become one.
Metro Homelessness Commission (MHC) and Continuum of Care (CoC) first met in the Spring to discuss a potential merger. The two groups both help the homeless. MHC works in outreach and education and CoC works with service providers to get homeless people the help they need.
"If we really believe, as a city, that people need to be housed, then we need to work together to do that. And you can't do it in a bifurcated system," said Liz Allen Fey, chairman of the board for MHC.
How the merger would work is still to be decided. The group met Friday morning for their monthly gathering to discuss some of the details.
One of the goals of merging is to create an organization that can better track Nashville's homeless population.
"Where we are trying to move it is pulling together the data and information so we better understand the homeless community," said Sean Muldoon, chairman of CoC.
Allen Fey said the main goal of any homelessness group is to get roofs over the heads of the homeless.
"Right now we are at a wonderful growth state in this city," she said. "We have to be careful in that growth that we don't forget some of those folks that may not be benefiting from that growth."
