NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Only NewsChannel 5 was there during a would-be nightmare for Metro Police: a pursuit and standoff through miles of interstates in the middle of rush hour.
It happened Thursday around 5:30 p.m., when police say a man refused to stop for officers.
They began chasing the driver through the Germantown neighborhood at speeds only slightly higher than the speed limits in the area.
Several police cars trailed the driver, who police said was suicidal, onto the interstate heading east. At times, none of the police officers had their lights or sirens activated, a tactic that police said was used to calm the driver down in an attempt to diffuse the situation.
The chase hit rush-hour traffic and did not reach very high speeds.
The driver eventually sideswiped another car on Interstate 24, and wrecked on the side of the road. That led to a brief standoff before the man was eventually taken into custody.
