NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — An 8th-grader has been charged after Metro Police say he brought a loaded 9 millimeter pistol to school.

The gun was found in the 13-year-old student's backpack during a random search of a classroom at Madison Middle School.

Police say the pistol had six bullets in the magazine, but none in the chamber.

The student told officers he had the gun for protection in his neighborhood due to his gang affiliation.

He was taken to juvenile detention by police.
