Several local Red Cross volunteers traveled to Mississippi to help in flooding recovery efforts.

Seven volunteers left Monday. They’ll join other teams and 14 other Tennesseans who were already in place to coordinate housing and basic daily needs.

Homes were destroyed, and flooding left thousands of people in need.

“Right now, the primary need is first, shelter, because there's been so many displaced by flooding. But as a part of that, there's also feeding and providing for essential hygiene needs and so forth,” said Disaster Manager for the Red Cross, David Kitchen.

Kitchen said that they had not yet decided how long they will be in Mississippi.
