MURFRESSBORO, Tenn. (WTVF) — Middle Tennessee State University will require masks to be worn on campus this fall.
Students, faculty, staff and visitors all must wear face coverings and stay socially distant while inside any of the university's indoor public settings, MTSU President Sidney A. McPhee said.
MTSU plans to reopen for the fall semester with a modified level of in-person classes and a reduced campus student housing population. McPhee said these plans could depend on how the community responds to health recommendations on slowing the spread of COVID-19 in the coming weeks.
"If you want to be on campus, if you want the university to continue to stay open, you need to do these things: You need to wear a mask, you have to wash your hands, you need to do the things that the CDC and our local and state health officials ask you to do," McPhee said during an interview with C-SPAN's Washington Journal on Friday.
McPhee added that if students refuse to wear a face covering, they will either have to resort to online versions of their program or find another institution. He said the university will be very strict on its policy, including the possibility of expelling a student who flagrantly disregards the requirement.
