SPRING HILL, Tenn. (WTVF) — As a mom of two young kids April Fisher has learned to be pretty resilient over the year, but a recent experience at the Spring Hill Post Office left April beside herself.

April was with her four-year-old son Kenton mailing a package. Kenton suffers from cerebral palsy and had a minor stroke before he was born. As a result Kenton uses a small walker to get around and can’t walk long distances without getting tired. Which is why April has a handicap plaque on her car.

While leaving the Post Office recently a man approached April and started asking her why she was using the handicap spot.

“He said, ‘If your son is small enough can’t you just carry him?’" I told him that my son is a stroke survivor learning to walk again and he responded by saying, "‘This is America. I have a right to my opinion, you look like you need exercise,” April recalls.

At that point, in shock, April got into her car and started crying.

“I don’t abuse the handicap sticker. If I’m out and I don’t have Kenton with me I don’t park in a handicap spot,” she adds.

After the initial pain of the ordeal subsided April decided to use what had happened to her as a learning experience for others. She took to Facebook and typed out a post to let others know that just because someone doesn’t look like they have a disability, doesn’t mean they may not be dealing with one.

“I just don’t want people to assume that I’m parking there for my benefit. Not everybody you can see their illness, just because they look normal doesn’t mean they are taking advantage of the situation.”
