NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Dr. Reavis Mitchell, a well-known historian in Nashville, has passed away.

A cause of death was not immediately known.

Dr. Mitchell was a professor and Dean of Humanities and Behavioral Social Science at Fisk University, the school from which he graduated in 1969.

He appeared on NewsChannel 5 and NewsChannel 5 Plus many times over the years to talk about how race relations and civil rights affect the city. In 2019, he joined NewsChannel 5 political analyst Pat Nolan on "Inside Politics" to discuss Nashville’s role in the Civil Rights movement.
