NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A man has been accused of shooting his girlfriend during an argument and then lying about it to police.

Officers with the Metro Nashville Police Department were called to a duplex at 1331 Westchester Drive around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

A woman, identified as Segovia McKenzie, was shot at least once in the lower back. Her boyfriend, 23-year-old Deandre Sherrill, told police he came home to find her crying for help.

Using her phone, Sherrill called 911. However, when detectives asked him to take a gunshot residue test, Sherrill reportedly refused.

A witness told officers that Sherrill was seen entering the house prior to the incident. No one else was seen inside the home.

According to police, the 6-year-old child of McKenzie’s roommate claimed he saw Sherrill with two separate handguns that day. The boy also said the couple had been arguing.

Sherrill has now been charged with attempted criminal homicide. He was booked on a $500,000 bond.

McKenzie was taken to an area hospital, where she was listed in serious condition.
