Nashville mayoral candidates face off in televised debate Monday

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — As early voting in Davidson County gets into full swing, the two Nashville mayoral candidates participated in a televised debate Monday night.

NewsChannel 5 partnered with The Tennessean and Belmont University to host the first televised debate in the runoff election, which is set for September 12.

The debate between candidates Mayor David Briley and Councilman John Cooper was moderated by NewsChannel 5's Rhori Johnston and The Tennessean's Jessica Bliss.

In the August 1 election, Cooper came out on top with 36 percent of the votes, while Briley came in second with 26 percent.

Tickets were free, and were all given out ahead of the debate.

Early voting for the runoff election began on August 23.
