AUSTIN, Texas – One person was stabbed to death and two others were injured by a suspect in downtown Austin on Friday, according to the Austin Police Department.
Sgt. David Daniels says officers were called to a report of a disturbance at a coffee shop in the 800 block of South Congress Avenue shortly before 8 a.m. local time. That disturbance escalated and an individual sustained unspecified injuries before patrons in the coffee shop intervened and detained the suspect, according to Daniels.
As the first responding officers pulled up to the coffee shop, police say the suspect broke away and ran to a Freebirds World Burrito in the 500 block of South Congress, where the suspect stabbed two people, one of which died from his injuries.
The suspect then fled and managed to get on the roof of a business before jumping off and sustaining injuries. The suspect was then apprehended and transported to a local hospital, as were the two surviving victims.
The Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services (ATCEMS) identified the deceased victim as a man in his 20s. The two surviving victims were identified as men in their 20s and 50s. Both suffered potentially life-threatening injuries, according to ATCEMS.
Daniels says this was the city’s first homicide of 2020.
