Hundreds of loose coffee cans wash up on Florida beach

If coffee is the best part of waking up, then Indialantic, Fl. was the place to be on Tuesday morning.

Photos show that hundreds of yellow sealed coffee cans began dotting the beach around dawn on Tuesday. Florida Today reported that onlookers flocked to the scene to pick up and take home some free joe — some even going as far as to fill trash bags with coffee.

The coffee appeared to be cans of "Cafe Bustelo," a Cuban-style brand of coffee owned by Folgers and parent company Smuckers.

According to reports, the loose coffee cans are the result of a missing load of shipping containers that fell off a cargo ship over the weekend. Officials estimate that as many as 25 containers fell off the ship, some of them containing hazardous materials.

"We're checking to make sure it's nothing else but coffee," said Elvin Rodriguez, a marine science technician with the Coast Guard told Florida Today.

The U.S. Coast Guard issued a warning to boaters late Monday, warning them to be alert for for loose items and containers floating in the ocean.
