Paul Kantner, a co-founder of psychedelic rock band Jefferson Airplane, died on Thursday according to a report from the San Francisco Chronicle. He was 74 years old.

The Chronicle reports that Kantner died of multiple organ failure following a heart attack he suffered earlier this week.

Kantner formed Jefferson Airplane in 1965, and the band’s music came to define the counterculture movement of the late 1960s. He later formed spinoff group Jefferson Starship in the early 1970s with other former members of Jefferson Airplane.

Kantner was a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He was inducted as part of Jefferson Airplane in 1996.
