A man was shot by police after he allegedly stabbed a K9 deputy in the eye with a knife on Saturday morning in San Diego County, California.
The incident happened at around 5:30 a.m. in a neighborhood in Rancho Santa Fe.
According to a sheriff’s spokesperson, deputies were called to reports of a man armed with a knife and screaming.
Deputies tried to subdue the man using non-lethal force, including a K9 deputy. The suspect then stabbed the dog in the eye and fled into nearby residential complex, the spokesperson said.
The suspect broke into one of the units, as residents inside safely locked themselves inside a room. The suspect stepped out of unit and told deputies that he'd slashed a resident inside the unit.
Deputies opened fire at the suspect after he raised his knife at the officers.
The suspect was transported to a nearby hospital, his condition is unknown at this time. The K9 deputy was transported to a nearby veterinarian and is expected to recover from its injury.
The resident inside the apartment was unharmed.
