CARTHAGE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Almost 50 dogs were rescued among dangerous conditions in an abandoned home near Carthage.

The Animal Rescue Corps responded to a request for help from local rescue organization Waggin' Tails Saturday afternoon. The crews found 48 dogs living in "deplorable conditions" at the scene. They also found the remains of at least 10 deceased animals.

Rescue Corps officials said the home contained high levels of ammonia gas, along with urine-soaked floors and a large amount of feces. The dogs showed conditions of anemia, eye injuries, respiratory distress, and other untreated injuries.

"Time was of the essence for these animals," ARC Executive Director Tim Woodward said.

All rescued animals are being cared for at ARC's Rescue Operations Center in Lebanon. They will receive exams, vaccinations, and any necessary treatments.

For those interested in fostering or adopting, the organization will list its shelter partners on its Facebook page.
