Neighbors throughout South Nashville said a strange noise has been shaking their homes, and scaring their pets, and they want to know what is causing it.
“It’s obnoxious,” said William Cazeleski, who has lived in the Woodbine neighborhood for 13 years. “It’s loud. All the windows shake and the dog freaks out.”
“It’s become almost every day and much louder than normal,” said Cassanda Sotos, who lives in the 7 Oaks neighborhood. “It sounded like an explosion.”
Questions and concerns about the situation have been circulating on neighborhood Facebook pages throughout the 13th and 16th districts. Residents reported hearing the noise multiple times each day for months.
The source of the noise is the Skyhawk United States Postal Service Warehouse under construction off McGavock Pike. The area was rezoned in 2013 to pave the way for the industrial park. The warehouse will be approximately 450,000 square feet.
According to the Rock Solutions LLC website, work began on the project at the end of July. “The job has consisted of line drilling and blasting mass rock. The job’s focus has been time, safety, and fast paced. Rock Solutions has worked hand in hand with the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority on a daily basis to ensure the safety of incoming and outgoing aircraft.”
A spokesperson for the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance said consumers have filed 10 complaints with the state related to the project. Based on the blasting and seismograph inspections, the allowable limits for vibration and noise were not exceeded.
In most cases, Tennessee code does not require the blasters to give neighbors notice before working, however, there are requirements the blasters must post signs and provide a warning sound prior to working.
Neighbors said the project has been very disruptive to a large area, and they are worried the blasting will impact the foundation of their homes. Many also said they feel like the blasting company should have done more to notify them of the situation.
“I don’t think it would be unreasonable to at least notify people who live in a certain radius not to be alarmed when their house shakes,” said Sotos.
Rock Solutions LLC did not respond to Newschannel5’s emails or phone calls regarding the project. It is unknown how long it will take for the project to be completed.
If consumers have complaints about the project, they can call the Tennessee State Fire Marshal’s Office at 615-741-7190.
