NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Mayor Karl Dean has been ending his stint in office in high fashion. Saturday the mayor and Parks Director Tommy Lynch were down on the riverfront to unveil the newest addition to Riverfront Park.

The new Riverfront Landing was designed with an upper and lower park with shaded seating and lighted fields for activities.

It also came with an artificial beach with access to the river and a new docking plaza for riverboats, which has been something Mayor Dean hopes will engage the community a little more.

“We want people to be active, we want them to enjoy the outdoors, we want to preserve open face,” Mayor Dean said. “This park is special because it really for the first time is going to give people direct access to the open river.”

The Landing has been situated on the east bank of the riverfront directly adjacent to the Bridge Building.

This was the fourth riverfront project completed while Dean has been in office.

On the river Saturday morning, event organizers hosted the 9th Annual Cumberland River Dragon Boat Festival.

The event included dragon boat racing, educational activities, and cultural performances.

Around 40 teams participated in the dragon boat races with about 20 members per team.
