NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — As the presidential inauguration of Joe Biden approaches, divisions remain as deep as ever across the country. But Vanderbilt University is starting a new project -- hoping to find political common ground.
It's called the Vanderbilt Project on Unity and American Democracy.
In its first night of events, the project hosted a conversation between moderator Jon Meacham, former Vice President Al Gore and former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice.
Gore spoke about what he says is the impact of such a divided America.
"It tears apart the delicate process by which a free people debate and discuss the challenges that are facing them," Gore said.
It’s a situation Gore said is made worse by social media echo chambers, with people only seeing news they agree with.
But he says there is good news in that area too.
"I think we’ve seen some developments just in this last horrible week with some of the Internet-based companies finally excepting their responsibility to exercise more oversight over what they allow to go out over their platforms," Gore said.
Of course, some Republicans like Tennessee Senator Marsha Blackburn have come out against banning President Trump on social media platforms, calling it censorship.
