NASHVILLE, Tenn. - For the first time ever, the Fraternal Order of Police is getting involved in the push to preserve the state's highest court.

On Wednesday, the state law enforcement group announced its support for three Tennessee Supreme Court justices up for a retention vote next month.

Chief Justice Gary Wade, Justice Sharon Lee, and Justice Cornelia Clark were appointed by a Democratic governor and are now being targeted by Republican lawmakers for defeat.

The FOP said it decided to take the unusual step of endorsing the justices because the group feels strongly about the importance of fair and impartial courts.

“We enforce as officers the laws that are written, and we expect our justices to enforce the laws the way they interpret the laws and adjudicate on what the interpretations are,” said State FOP President Johnny Crumby.

A bi-partisan group of district attorneys and former prosecutors from across the state announced their support for the Justices on Tuesday.
