NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Hunger never takes a holiday. That's why earlier this week - NewsChannel 5 and the Scripps Howard Foundation presented a check for 10-thousand dollars to Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee to help our neighbors in need.

Second Harvest has a network of nearly 500 partner agencies across 46-counties in Middle and West Tennessee and feeds thousands of families every year. Our $10,000 donation will be used to fund two mobile food pantries.

"There's never a time that anyone should go hungry, but it's even more important this time of year. This is the season of joy and celebration and giving and we don't want any families to be without," said Nancy Keil, president and CEO of Second Harvest.

NewsChannel 5 and the Foundation sponsored a mobile pantry back in May and we were able to more than 400 people with 2-weeks worth of groceries - including lots of fresh produce. The mobile pantries aren't set up like typical food banks. They are basically outdoor farmer's markets and include dozens of items for families to shop for - and the best part is everything is free.

NewsChannel's Vicki Yates described the experience. "It was such a wonderful feeling at the end of the day to know that you really have helped. It was fun to go through the line with families. What about this? Nah, what about this? People have a choice. It was great."

If you'd like to help local families put food on the table - now is the time to make donation. Right now - every dollar you give will be doubled. So instead of every dollar buying 4 meals - it will now buy 8.
