NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — COVID-19 is taking its toll on small businesses all over the mid-state, including a popular pie shop on Jefferson Street in Nashville. On top of it all, the store is now dealing with a break in from over the weekend.

Herman Patton, a.k.a. "The Pie Man," helped open Sweet Creations bakery in 2011. On top of damage from the March tornadoes, closure from COVID-19 and then this month’s windstorm, on Sunday, Patton says someone broke in to the store. But it’s not justice that the Pie Man wants now.

"The person that has done that, they need some mental help probably," Patton said. "Maybe they didn’t have an address to get a stimulus check out or something like that. I think it’s more about the person that has done this needs a little more love in Nashville than maybe even Sweet Creations does."

As police still investigate, Patton said he wanted to speak directly to whoever broke into his store.

"We ain’t got nothing but love for you baby!" Patton said.

Patton says he's always been a positive person, but he says times like these put small crimes into a bigger perspective.

"What you got to do is show compassion to each other and mankind," Patton said. "That’s the only way we’re going to make it out of here."

That's something Patton says we could all try to do more of, crime victim or not.
