NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — A North Nashville nurse is finally home after spending three months in New York combatting COVID-19.

Keisha Coleman returned on Independence Day. As a critical care nurse, the 25-year-old worked in the ICU for multiple hospitals in New York, one of the country’s hardest-hit states.

Although both physically and mentally draining, she knew her work was critically important.

"I had four to five patients and those are critical patients, usually you only have two," said Coleman, "so these patients were sedated, they were on ventilators and paralyzed, so it was scary."

As numbers continue to climb in Tennessee she’s pleading with folks to take the virus seriously and to wear a mask.

"I've seen a lot of people die," said Coleman, "I bagged a lot of bodies every day and it was really scary.

Scary and chaotic, but most of all rewarding. Coleman says she wouldn't trade the experience for anything.

Coleman has deep roots in Nashville. She graduated from Tennessee State University in 2017 and worked at Nashville General Hospital and St. Thomas Midtown Hospital, so she's happy to be home. Coleman has decided to take this month off from work to recharge and spend time with family.
