The victim, 48-year-old Barry Lafferty, reportedly got into an argument with 50-year-old Juan Carahza inside the Trinity Lane Market.
After leaving the store, Carahza told police he called Aguilar and said that he’d been assaulted. From there, the suspect allegedly went to the market looking for the man who assaulted Carahza.
Police said Aguilar was seen leaving the market in a dark, four-door sedan.
Right before he was hit, police said Lafferty was assaulted by three men at the intersection of Edwin Street and Meridian Street.
Afterwards, Lafferty continued walking southbound on Meridian Street. He was struck a short time later by the driver of a dark-colored sedan, who fled the scene.
Lafferty was taken to Skyline Medical Center, where he died.
Police said Aguilar admitted driving the vehicle that struck Lafferty. Witnesses said the car was traveling at a high rate of speed and crossed the double yellow dividing line prior to the collision.
Investigators have asked the public’s help in locating the car, a four-door purple/maroon Honda Accord.
Aguilar allegedly said he parked the car in the area of Gatewood Avenue and Dickerson Pike.
However, police said it was not there. The vehicle would have front end damage, especially on the driver’s side.
Aguilar was held in lieu of $500,000 bond.
