Leaders in Nashville have taken a step toward keeping visitors safe along lower Broadway.

Officials with Metro Public Works plan to install new barriers along lower Broad in the new year.

They will look similar to those in front of the symphony center, which are designed to block vehicles from driving on sidewalks potentially packed with people.

The barriers will go up between 3rd and 5th avenues on Broadway in downtown Nashville. The city has already seen more pedestrians killed in accidents than ever before.

The project also called for widening the sidewalks around downtown in addition to the new barriers.
