An update to the case of a murder of a Rutherford County fisherman has cleared detectives’ only person of interest, putting them back at square one.
Officials said the man named a person of interest Thursday night has been identified, thanks to tips, but was no longer a suspect. He was actually in jail the day of the murder.
Gregg Hawkins was killed while stopping a burglary on Oct. 16 at the Mona Boat Ramp in Smyrna.
Detectives have asked anyone that may have information on the case to call the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office.
