MADISON, Tenn. (WTVF) — An eighth grader in Madison was taken into custody after police say he brought a loaded gun to school on Wednesday.

The 13-year-old told officers he had the pistol for protection in his neighborhood. It was found in his backpack during a random search of a Madison Middle School classroom by Metro Schools security.

Police said the pistol had six bullets in the magazine, but none in the chamber.

The student was then taken to juvenile detention.
