NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Metro police have asked the public’s help in identifying the suspect who shot and killed a 17-year-old girl in Nashville.

The shooting happened at 10:10 p.m. Thursday on Whites Creek Pike and Green Lane.

Police said Ashanti Nikole Posey, a senior at Hillsboro High School, was fatally injured when someone opened fire on her silver Chevrolet Malibu.

According to police, Posey and her 17-year-old passenger had just left a nearby neighborhood where they had made a small marijuana sale -- that's when someone opened fire at the intersection.

It is unclear whether the shots came from a vehicle or from someone on foot. Posey’s friend, who wasn't hurt, climbed into her lap and drove several miles to the 5100 block of Whites Creek Pike, where she ran to a home and got help.

Posey was rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where she died.

Hillsboro High School Principal, Dr. Shuler Pelham, released the following statement:

“Ashanti was bright and thoughtful student and a member of the Lady Burros basketball team. The Hillsboro High family is devasted by the news of her death, and our hearts go out to her family and friends. We’ll be doing everything we can to offer support to her fellow Hillsboro students to process their emotions and grief during this difficult time.”
