NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — The westbound lanes of I-24 were briefly closed due to a deadly crash in Nashville Wednesday night.

A woman was killed when she was hit by an SUV at mile marker 58.6, near Haywood Lane according to Metro Nashville Police officials.

Officials say 33-year-old Brittany Lynn Lewis was hit just after 8 p.m. She died at the scene.

The driver, 60-year-old Kevin Thomas, of La Vergne, told officers he was driving his Mercury Mariner in the second to the far-right lane of the interstate when he came upon Lewis who was standing in the middle of his lane. Thomas said that he could not avoid hitting her.

It's unclear why Lewis was on the interstate. There were no abandoned or broken down vehicles near the crash. And officials say Thomas showed no indications of impairment.
