NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Nashville's homicide total rose to 48 Sunday night after a 21-year-old man was shot and killed while sitting in his car in west Nashville.

The incident happened around 8:15 p.m. near Hadley Park. This was the 48th deadly shooting in Nashville -- the eighth within the past month.

Officials with Metro police said Eric Jackson was sitting in his car with his girlfriend when two gunmen approached him.

The suspects opened Jackson's door and ordered him to get out of the car. He tried to drive away, but the vehicle got caught on a utility pole wire.

One of the gunmen opened fire and Jackson was struck in the head. He was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he died.

Police said the gunmen fled on foot toward I-40.

This was one of three violent incidents that happened over the weekend. A woman was found stabbed to death inside her Nocturne Drive apartment complex.

A third person was shot on Due West Avenue around 11:30 in Madison. The man was taken to an area hospital, where he is expected to survive.

With only a few months remaining in the year, the murder rate is already the highest it’s been in two years. In 2012, 61 people were killed in Nashville shootings, while 41 were killed last year.

Police have not released any suspect information, other than they are male. Anyone with information was asked to call Crime Stoppers at 615-74-CRIME.
