Metro Nashville Police officers shared tips on how to keep your home or business from becoming a target during a community class.

Officials with the Madison precinct held a special class Tuesday night where they outlined simple steps homeowners can take to make your place less attractive to thieves.

  • Make sure your hedges are trimmed to prevent stowaways.
  • Provide good outdoor lighting since thieves often work at night.
  • Make sure you get into the routine of locking your cars, even if they're in the garage.

"I think a lot of us are guilty of letting the hedges overgrow or forgetting to change the lightbulbs or maybe getting that one spotlight in that you know cost 10-dollars at the hardware store and it'd be worthwhile certainly worthwhile presentation," said Sgt. Henry Particelli.

Neighbors at the class were also given a checklist with other simple tips to keep your home and your neighborhood safer.
