Metro Nashville Police have urged the public to “park smart” after a large number of reported car thefts in Madison.
According to police, there were 50 motor vehicle thefts from the beginning of January through the end of February.
Detectives said 35 of those were stolen because the thief had the keys, while 19 were taken while the vehicle was still running.
Police want to emphasize their park smart initiative – meaning drivers should lock their car doors, hide any valuables, and take their keys with them.
Those caught leaving their cars running could face a fine. That amount would be left up to a judge.
The only way a driver can legally leave his or her car running is if the vehicle has a remote start.
Police said some thieves drive around looking for vehicles left running because they’re such an easy target.
