NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — It's a frightening statistic more than five million Americans have Alzheimer's or another form of dementia. The disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S.

More often than not, from diagnosis to death friends and family slowly watch loved ones forget them, and their life. But as photojournalist Nathan Sharkey shows us sometimes a paintbrush is all that's needed to spark a memory.

The Mid-South Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association is available to help patients and families 24 hours a day. They can also assist in getting your loved ones involved in programs that might spark memories.

The 'round-the-clock hotline number is 800-272-3900.
