NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Calls to roofing companies are ringing off the hook with snow and ice building up and causing leaking roofs.

Most of the leaks are caused by ice dams that build up in your gutters as the ice thaws and refreezes, causing other melting ice to pool up on your roof, where it finds its way inside your home.

There are some things some homeowners can do to limit that damage until a professional can look at it.

"If you can go upstairs in your attic with a couple of pails, some towels to soak up moisture, you may have to check it every couple of hours, depends on how bad the leak is, that will keep it from becoming much worse on the interior," said Tim Leeper of Tim Leeper Roofing.

But roofing companies say to expect a wait after the ice thaws -- that's when most calls to roofing companies come in.
