MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WTVF) — Rutherford County Schools has fired a bus driver after a comment was posted on social media.

According to The Daily News Journal, the comment was made on a post about a protest march in Murfreesboro on Monday. The comment – posted by someone named Gregory T. Grant – said, “Just give them all some watermelon and they will be happy and go home.”

James Evans, with Rutherford County Schools, confirmed that Grant was placed on immediate suspension Tuesday morning while they investigated. Evans said later that afternoon, they notified Grant that he was no longer eligible to serve as a bus driver for the district.

“We take these matters seriously, which is why we responded quickly to the complaint,” Evans said in part.

Evans said they use a contract system for their bus service and that bus drivers are not the district’s direct employees.
